Australia’s first public medical care map has been released.
The Atlas of World Medical Care (AWEMC) is a database of all the medical facilities in Australia and the US.
It is based on a data set of almost 12 million patients collected over a 10-year period.
AWEMC is designed to enable health care providers to identify the health care needs of their patients.
Its first release shows that, with the help of the Atlas, doctors in Australia can now more accurately predict the outcomes of their operations.
“This has opened up a lot of doors,” said AWEMCA CEO Michael O’Donoghue.
“I think we are going to see a huge increase in the number of people coming into our health services, and the number that can be treated with the appropriate care.”
The Atlas uses patient-level data to calculate patient-specific needs, and is a first in the world, according to AWEMD.
“The Atlas can be a game-changer for a lot more of our patients than you might think,” said Dr Alyssa Crouch, who works with AWEMMCA.
“When we started the Atlas it was very much a research project, and we’ve been very excited about it,” Dr Crouch said.
“What we’ve seen in the Atlas is that the Atlas provides an incredibly powerful way of looking at the health of our populations, so we can make better decisions for them.”
In order to create the Atlas and build a better understanding of how patients experience health care, Dr Cunker’s team has had to start from scratch.
“We have to make sure we’ve got everything on the same level,” she said.
To help with the process, AWEMAH is partnering with a number of Australian universities, and has been able to use a variety of data sources to help with this.
“Our data collection is incredibly diverse,” Dr O’Donnell said.
“At the moment, we have access to almost 6,000 medical records from hospitals across Australia, and over 600,000 patient records from the US, and many others.”
The data is gathered using a wide range of sources including anonymised data from the Medicare website, a US patient’s own records, the National Health and Medical Records Service (NHMRS) and data from insurance companies.
“We’re collecting data from all sorts of places,” Dr Aird said.
AHEMCA has also been using the Atlas to improve the accuracy of their data collection.
“For example, when you look at the Atlas of Australian Health Care, we can see a much more accurate picture of the healthcare in the country,” Dr Dickey said.
Dr Dickey and his team are using data from AWE MED to build a model of Australia’s health care system.
The model includes the number and location of hospitals, as well as the number, age and gender of patients.”AWE MED is an incredible data source,” Dr Joffe said.
“[We] can look at data for a period of time, and then we can look back and see how well we’re doing.”
The results from the Atlas are being used to improve outcomes in the health sector, according the Atlas’s authors.
“If you look across the board in Australia, there is an improvement in the quality of care,” Dr Meeks said.
